Those of us who have been following the film’s development over the past six months or so have long suspected it, but now the rumor has finally been confirmed: Sylvester Stallone will be sitting in the director’s chair on Creed 2. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, he’s already directed four of the previous seven films in the Rocky franchise. Toss in the fact that Creed writer/director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) seems more interested in other things and Sly’s return to the chair was inevitable.
The action superstar will helm and produce the film based upon his own screenplay for it. Plot details remain sketchy, but all signs point towards Rocky IV star Dolph Lundgren returning to the franchise. Stallone has hinted in the past that he would like to see Michael B. Jordan‘s character, Adonis Creed, face off against either the son or protege of the man who killed his father: Lundgren’s Ivan Drago.
This certainly wouldn’t be new terrain for the series to cover, but I think it could prove an interesting direction given the current political climate. Tensions between the U.S. and Russia have never fully ceased since the Cold War ended, but 30+ years on from Rocky IV, we find ourselves heavily at odds with Russia once more. I don’t think we need a straight redux of that particular film, but tackling similar themes and issues explored within it from a more grounded angle is a perfectly valid path to take. If Stallone can keep the tone and heart of both Rocky Balboa and Creed intact here, we could be in for another great sequel.
Sorry. No data so far.
