Fox‘s latest X-Men spin-off moves one step closer to finally becoming reality. After numerous production issues, including seeing two other directors come and go (Rupert Wyatt & Doug Liman), Gambit is finally back on track. THR is reporting that the studio has begun negotiations of Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) to come on board as director. Verbinski most recently made A Cure for Wellness for the studio.
This development comes only days after a report surfaces that Daniel Craig is being courted to play Mr. Sinister in the film. Unlike previous times, the studio has wisely eschewed setting a release date for the picture in advance of production. It seems that they’ve learned their lesson. Still, based on their current scheduling of X-Men pictures, I’d be shocked if they aren’t banking on releasing it sometime in 2019, alongside their other long-promised spin-off, X-Force.
Channing Tatum remains on board as star and producer, with Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler-Donner, and Simon Kinberg also producing. The latest known draft of the screenplay was penned by Joshua Zetumer and Reid Carolin. Production is currently expected to begin sometime in early 2018. Verbinski is honestly a fine choice, although they might have to get a handle on him in the editing room. I like most of the guy’s films, but he has a habit of making them overlong.
Sorry. No data so far.
