As expected, Universal is still dealing a Fast film in 2019, just not The Fast and the Furious 9. Instead, that summer will see the release of the long-promised Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) spin-off film. As reported earlier this year, Hobbs will be joined in the action fun by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), making this a two-hander. The film is now set for a July 26th, 2019 release, with franchise regular Chris Morgan on writing duties.
A director has not been set and reportedly won’t be until Morgan hands in his first draft. That said, none other than Shane Black (Iron Man 3) resides at the top of their wishlist. It’s not hard to see why. After all, Black has been developing a Doc Savage film with Johnson for years and Statham has also been circling Black’s Destroyer film. Considering the fact that both of those projects have seemingly been backburned over at Sony, it’s not hard to picture Black opting to make this film with the both of them for the time being.
In the meantime, all three continue to keep themselves occupied. Johnson is currently filming the action thriller Skyscraper and will follow it up with another season of “Ballers” and Disney’s film Jungle Cruise. Statham’s latest, the creature feature adventure Meg, is currently in post-production and the actor is expected to shoot a Hong Kong-based action film later in the year. As for Black? He’s now in post on The Predator, which seems release next summer. Regardless of whether or not he gets this gig, I urge all to see his most recent release, The Nice Guys. It’s phenomenal and deserving of more love.
Sorry. No data so far.
