Earlier this week, Fox issued the first trailer for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the final installment in the studio’s Maze Runner trilogy. The films are, of course, based on the young adult dystopian sci-fi novels by James Dashner. This particular film famously had to stop production last year to break for nearly a year’s time after its lead actor, Dylan O’Brien, was seriously injured on set. After healing and fulfilling other acting commitments, O’Brien returned and production resumed earlier this year.
Unlike similar franchises such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, this series has actually managed to keep the same core creative team intact. All three films have been written by T.S. Nowlin (Pacific Rim: Uprising) and directed by Wes Ball. The cast, of course, has remained intact as well, with the younger actors carrying across all three films and the older characters filled out by a rather impressive array of character actor talent.
I’m going to be honest: a lot of these YA sci-fi action films haven’t been my cup of tea. I really liked the first Hunger Games film, but didn’t care much for the second and have yet to finish the series. Divergent did nothing for me whatsoever, so I skipped out on its sequels as well. I actually liked the first Maze Runner and rather enjoyed its sequel. They’re well-made, well-acted, and have a creativity to them that I find lacking in most similar films. Basically, I’m in for The Death Cure.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure is the third film in the Maze Runner trilogy. It is based on the novel by James Dashner. The film is directed by Well Ball, from a screenplay by T.S. Nowlin. It is produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, and Lee Stollman. The film stars Dylan O’Brien as ‘Thomas’, Kaya Scoldelario as ‘Teresa Agnes’, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as ‘Newt’, Dexter Darden as ‘Frypan’, Nathalie Emmanuel as ‘Harriet’, Katherine McNamara as ‘Sonya’, Giancarlo Espositio as ‘Jorge’, Aidan Gillen as ‘Janson’, Walton Goggins as ‘Lawerence’, Ki Hong Lee as ‘Minho’, Jacob Lofland as ‘Aris Jones’, Barry Pepper as ‘Vince’, Will Poulter as ‘Gally’, Rosa Salazar as ‘Brenda’, and Patricia Clarkson as ‘Ava Paige’.
