Fox Searchlight Pictures has finally issued a release date for the latest film by director/writer/producer Guillermo Del Toro. His upcoming fantasy adventure romance picture, The Shape of Water, will arrives in theaters on December 8th, 2017. Mind you that’s a week before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which reminds this writer of Del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army hitting theaters shortly before the arrival of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Lucky for The Shape of Water, it was made on a much smaller budget than the Hellboy sequel.
It also, as of this time, has no competition on that weekend. As a result, chances are good that it can at least pull in some sort of audience, especially when it comes to Del Toro’s pull with fandom. Will it offer up his first outright hit since Pan’s Labyrinth? Only time will tell. The filmmaker doesn’t have the best luck at the box office, but if the marketing for this particular feature is on point, he has a shot at regaining some notable success in a December that is largely barren until the end of the month, outside of Star Wars.
The film tells the story of a woman and her friend working in a secure government laboratory during the Cold War. Amidst isolation, loneliness, and secrecy, they find themselves on a fantastical journey as they discover a startling secret within the facility.
The Shape of Water is the latest original picture from filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. It was written by Del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, and produced by Del Toro and J. Miles Dale. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Lauren Lee Smith, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlberg, Nick Searcy, and David Hewlett.
