CONFIRMED: Harrelson Goes Space Scoundrel With ‘Han Solo’

UPDATE: Harrelson’s casting in the film has been confirmed. Get ready for some Space Woody action!

It seems that a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, in addition to wars among the stars, there was also Woody Harrelson. According to Variety, the actor is close to joining the cast of the upcoming untitled A Star Wars Story outing centered around a young Han Solo. The film, which is being written by Lawrence & Jon Kasdan and directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller), is currently slated to arrive in theaters on May 25th, 2018.

According to the outlet, Harrelson is expected to play a character who serves as a mentor to the young Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). Donald Glover is set to appear as a young Lando Calrissian and actress Emilia Clarke is also among the film’s cast. While not yet officially confirmed, both Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo are expected to return as Chewbacca, carrying on from said shared role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII.

This marks the third big science fiction franchise that Harrelson has hopped onto in recent years, following his role in The Hunger Games films and his upcoming villainous turn in this summer’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Way to go, Woody!

There were rumors circulating yesterday that this film, which is expected to begin production soon, might be pushed back to a December 2018 date. If true, such a move would be in keeping with the franchise’s current hold on the month. I’m sure many fans will be disappointed if the postponement becomes reality, but given the haphazard nature of Rogue One‘s production, perhaps giving Lord & Miller another handful of months to finesse this outing isn’t the worst idea?

In the meantime, we still have Star Wars: Episode VIII to look forward to this December. I’m sure we’ll finally be seeing footage from it sooner rather than later, as well as the film’s true title being revealed. The annual Star Wars Celebration is only a few months away and I’ll be shocked if both things are not unveiled there. We just have to be patient!

I am a BIG fan of Star Wars. That said, the Han Solo spin-off never really resonated with me. I love Han, don’t get me wrong, but is it needed? Isn’t he bad-ass enough the way we know him? Which leads me into… WHY THE EFF DOES HE NEED A MENTOR? And what for? Unless the third Star Wars Story/Anthology film is about some random jawa, this spin-off is the one i’m least excited about… though I will see it and buy the blu-ray.
