UPDATED: ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Expands Its Cast With Old Favorites

UPDATE: Karl Urban himself has shot down his involvement with this project. Either he’s towing the company line to cover up an important surprise or (more than likely) he is telling the truth. Of course it makes one wonder why his name was on that call sheet, but I have simple theory: it was supposed to read Karel Roden, a GDT regular. Their names are similar and Roden has a long history with Del Toro, so him being involved wouldn’t be a shocking turn of events.

Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 giant robots vs. monsters opus, has been in production in Australia for a few months now. Today a few more cast members have been revealed, via the Instagram account of cinematographer Dan Mindel. According to a cast list spied within the image that was released, we have far more cast members returning than originally thought. Rinko Kikuchi‘s “Mako Mori”, Burn Gorman‘s “Hermann Gottlieb”, and Charlie Day‘s “Newt Geiszler” are all back, joining a returning Idris Elba as “Stacker Pentecost” (likely for flashbacks). In addition to retaining these three characters, the sequel is adding none other than Karl Urban to the world of Pacific Rim!

Sadly nothing is known of Urban’s character at this time, not even his name. Urban has always been a welcome sight in any film, particularly genre fare. I’m happy to see him showing up in more and more quality projects these days. Last year he appeared in both Star Trek Beyond and Pete’s Dragon, both of which were stellar. This year sees him play the villainous “Skurge the Executioner” in Thor: Ragnarok, as well as starring in an action thriller titled Hangman. This clearly comes next, with Urban also signed for future Star Trek and Riddick sequels. It’s nice to see him in demand again!

They all join the already-cast John Boyega as “Jake Pentecost”. Cailee Spaeny as “Amara”, Mackenyu as “Ryoichi”, and Scott Eastwood as “Lambert”. Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona, Rahart Adams, Karan Brar, Nick E. Tarabay, Ivanna Sakhno, Zhang Jin, Shyrley Rodriguez, Wesley Wong, Lilu Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying, and Qian Yongchen also star. While we know that Charlie Hunnam has already confirmed that he will not be reprising the role of “Raleigh Becket”, there’s still no word on whether or not Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., or Ron Perlman will be showing back up.

Steven S. DeKnight directs from a screenplay by himself, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin. Guillermo Del Toro has provided the story and is producing. Pacific Rim: Uprising is set to arrive in theaters on February 23rd, 2018.
