Freeform, formerly known as ABC Family, really seems intent on reinventing itself. In addition to their pretty bonkers series “Shadowhunters“, which is based on the popular Mortal Instrumentals book series, the network announced yesterday that they will be moving ahead with a series based on Marvel characters “Cloak & Dagger“. Today comes the announcement that Freeform will be home to a U.S. remake of the British science fiction series, “Misfits“. Should it go to series, the show will be written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz (“Chuck“, “The O.C.“) and Stephanie Savage (“Gossip Girl“, “Hart of Dixie“).
The original series, which ran from 2009 to 2013, centered on a group of juvenile delinquents doing community service who are hit with a freak lightning storm and imbued with superpowers. Instead of using their powers for the greater good, however, they mostly just resort back to their troublesome habits. The American version, which has been in the works for years, will be upping the group age to 20-somethings and changing the nature of the freak accident, this time having it involve chemicals. At this time, it remains unclear what other alterations Freeform will be making to the original concept.
