Brad Bird, as I’m sure you know, animated some of the most famous early scenes of Krusty the Clown on The Simpsons. In fact on a DVD commentary for The Simpsons it was stated that Bird loved Krusty so much that he would murder for the right to animate Krusty.
OK, so maybe I made the murder part up, but Bird does love Krusty and did direct the first two episodes of The Simpsons in which Krusty appeared. When Bird isn’t sitting around loving Krusty he uses his free time to direct feature films and from the looks of it they’re quite popular.
Obviously, I’m being a bit sarcastic. Of course I know Brad Bird has worked on stuff other than The Simpsons. He’s one of my favorite directors and I always like to joke that out of all the films he’s directed Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the least realistic.
Bird’s films often have a lot of heart, personality and imagination. His first film, The Iron Giant, is arguably the best example of all three, and is easily one of the greatest animated films of all time. Now after years of waiting it’s finally coming to Blu-ray on September 6th. And not only that, we’re going to get two Blu-ray options. A fairly standard release that will run about $15 and a mega collector’s edition that is going to cost you about $75. If you’re a big fan of this movie, I think you’ll be able to justify the $75.
In case you’ve never seen The Iron Giant here’s the synopsis followed by the trailer.
A young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy.
The standard Blu-ray is known as The Iron Giant: Signature Edition and will contain the following:
