‘Kingsman 2’ Gets A Title, Concept Art, & More

The sequel to Fox’s smash hit comic book actioner, Kingsman: The Secret Service, is about to begin production.  While we have yet to receive a full cast list or an official synopsis, today the people at Empire dished out quite a few details on the film.  Chiefly among which is its title: Kingsman: The Golden Circle.  Director Matthew Vaughn spoke to the outlet about the upcoming sequel and his initial hesitancy to direct the project after passing on both Kick-Ass 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past

“I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.”

That new villain is Poppy (Julianne Moore) and her dastardly plot involve the destruction of Kingsman headquarters.  In the aftermath of an attack, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) must head overseas to America.  There they must team up with the U.S. version of their organization: Statesman.  Among those they encounter will be Halle Berry’s head honcho spy, Ginger, and a gunslinger-esque agent named Jack, who has yet to be cast thus far.  Rounding out the cast so far is Edward Holcroft, who is returning as turncoat agent Charlie Hesketh from the first film.  I’m guessing he now works for Poppy.

Vaughn on the challenges of crafting a sequel…

“You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”

Apparently the film will have its fair share of surprising and wild elements, from one-armed henchmen & robot dogs to barroom brawls & a skiing action sequence.  The die hard Bond fan in me is positively squealing in delight right now.  I can’t wait to see what Vaughn has in store for us on this one.

The piece dished out some concept art from the film, which you can find below.  Vaughn and long-time writing/producing partner Jane Goldman have penned the script, which continues on from the concepts created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar in the original comic.  Kingsman: The Golden Circle arrives in cinemas next summer on June 17th, 2017.
