Warner Bros. issued a brand new trailer today for their upcoming action/comedy, Central Intelligence, which pairs comedian Kevin Hart with action superstar Dwayne Johnson. The film is slated to hit theaters this summer in about 3 months, on June 17th. As someone who loves Johnson, but isn’t all that fond of Hart, this actually looks pretty entertaining.
It helps that the trailer leans heavier on the action than on Hart’s usual brand of loud slapstick humor, although I assume the film will contain a fair amount of it. More than anything, however, it’s Johnson’s characterization here that excites me. He usually tends to be the gruff, serious-type these days; playing scenes with a wink and letting any comedy arise out of his macho persona. Here there’s even more of a twinkle in his eye than usual and there’s a childlike sense of fun on display that could make this an absolute winner if the film capitalizes on it. I was skeptical about this project when it was announced, but as of right now, I’m in.
Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson), a one-time bullied geek who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent, comes home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of the former “big man on campus” (Kevin Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. The two enter a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses, and espionage that could get them both killed.
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball, We’re the Millers), Central Intelligence arrives in theaters on June 17th. It stars the combined talents of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Amy Ryan, Aaron Paul, Danielle Nicolet, Timothy John Smith, Megan Park, Slaine, and Brett Azar.
