Zendaya Joins Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man’

According to Deadline, Zendaya (“Shake It Up“, “Zapped“) has been cast in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot.  The actress will play a character named ‘Michelle‘.  The role is expected to be a leading one in the film, although she will apparently not be a romantic interest for Peter Parker (Tom Holland).  The still-untitled Spider-Man film is expected to shoot later this year and arrive in theaters on July 7th, 2017.

While we know next to nothing about this role, current scuttlebutt points towards Zendaya possibly playing a version of character Michele Gonzales.  The character had a short fling with Peter Parker in the comics, but was mostly just a friend.  It remains to be seen if that will hold true here as well, assuming the rumor pans out.

The upcoming reboot will be directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.  Tom Holland will play the titular role of ‘Spider-Man’, reprising it after his debut in this year’s Captain America: Civil War.  Holland and Zendaya are the only official cast members for the project at this time, but both are expected to be joined by Marisa Tomei as ‘Aunt May Parker’ and Robert Downey Jr. as ‘Iron Man’.
