“Riverdale“, the upcoming live action series based on the popular “Archie Comics” reboot, has cast its first roles. Lili Reinhart (The Kings of Summer) has been cast as Betty Cooper and Cole Sprouse (“The Suite Life of Zack & Cody“) has nabbed the role of Jughead Jones. As previously reported, Roberto Aguirre-Sacaso has penned the pilot and will executive produce the show, should it go to series. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater will also produce, should the show move forward.
The series is meant to be a satirical subversive take on the classic characters and setting from the long-lasting “Archie” brand and will draw heavily from their current publications. Deadline, who broke the news, also dished out some descriptions for these new iterations Betty and Jughead…
Betty is described as a “sweet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome with a huge crush on her longtime best friend, Archie. Tired of being the perfect daughter, student, sister, etc., she turns to her new friend, Veronica, for life advice — much to the consternation of her emotionally brittle mother.”
Jughead will be characterized as a “heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews. He is still smarting from the rift that took place between the two.”
“Riverdale” is one of six pilots that The CW will be looking at as potential series material for their 2016-2017 lineup. It is the only pilot on deck that pulls from comic book source material. The others hail from various other genres, from science fiction (“No Tomorrow“, “Untitled Mars Series“) to horror (“Transylvania“, “Untitled Kevin Williamson Series“) to a film-to-TV adaptation (“Frequency“). Chances are that only half of these will make it to series, but I have a feeling “Riverdale” will definitely be among those that make the jump.
Sorry. No data so far.
