What an up-and-down bit of casting this particular role has been? Way back in the fall, actresses like Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman were rumored to be playing Queen Hippolyta, mother of the titular Wonder Woman in WB’s upcoming adaptation of the classic DC Comics character. Kidman was even reported to be in final negotiations at one point. We all waited for confirmation, but it ultimately never came.
The (mostly) full casting announcement finally arrived and there was no mention of Kidman or other rumored-to-be-locked actors, such as Sean Bean and Eva Green. Speculation then took over. Had Kidman and Bean’s roles ended up in the hands of the officially-cast Robin Wright and Danny Huston? Who ultimately nabbed the role that Green was sought for? Who were any of the confirmed cast members playing.
Rumors persisted, with some even stating that Wright’s role was a different one, but might be combined with Hippolyta due to Kidman having to bow out. Whether that whispered nugget was true or not, according to THR, we finally have Wonder Woman’s mother: Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, “The Following“). Nielsen joins the already-shooting production, whose cast also boasts Gal Gadot in the titular role, Chris Pine as ‘Steve Trevor’, and the illustrious likes of Danny Huston, Robin Wright, Said Tagmaoui, Elena Anaya, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, and Lucy Davis in unspecified roles. The film is directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster) and arrives in theaters on June 23rd, 2017.
