This should come as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with director Scott Derrickson’s work and it’s an announcement I’ve been expecting for months, but now it’s official: screenwriter C. Robert Cargill has been working on the Doctor Strange script. Previously conjured up by the likes of Thomas Dean Donelly & Joshua Oppenheimer, as well as Jon Spaihts, the script has been worked on by both the latter and the tag-team of Cargill and Derrickson for the past year.
I assume that Cargill is on hand for any quick on set rewrites, but this is not an announcement of the script being overhauled. It’s just that Cargill himself only just today announced his involvement in the production. Cargill and Derrickson go back a ways. The writer co-scripted the director’s last two films, Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil, as well as this year’s Sinister 2 (directed by Ciaran Foy). In addition to Doctor Strange, the dynamic screenwriting duo also have scripts in development for potential films based on The Outer Limits and Deus Ex. Having Cargill on board Strange just further illustrates how much Marvel is allowing filmmakers to put their own stamp on properties now as they play within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
