Reports are rolling out today that actor Sam Riley (Control, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) is currently in negotiations with DreamWorks Pictures to join their manga adaptation, Ghost in the Shell. No deal is in place just yet, but all parties are apparently keen on making it happen, so casting could well be imminent. The role that Riley is being eyed for is apparently that of the film’s villain.
Scarlett Johansson is already on board to play the lead, who is assumed to be a variation on franchise protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi. Pilou Asbeack (Lucy) has been signed to play Batou, Kusanagi’s parter, in the film. Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directs from a script currently being rewritten by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton). Production on the sci-fi action thriller is set to commence early next year ahead of a planned March 31st, 2017 release.
