Fede Alvarez Frontrunner To Direct ‘Justice League Dark’

We’ve been hearing a lot about Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe) this week and today is no different.  After various casting rumors across the past two days, today brought the names of those in contention for the director’s chair: Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) and the two man team of Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves).  Kudos to Joblo for dropping the exclusive earlier this evening.  The Scott Rudin & Guillermo Del Toro-produced film is eyeing a mid-2016 shoot and utilizing a script from Del Toro.

According to our own sources, while Del Toro supposedly favors Keshales & Papushado for the gig, Warner Bros. has their eye on Alvarez for the job.  As a result, he is the current frontrunner for it.  There’s no word at this time if anyone else is in contention to direct the horror-themed team film. Whoever lands it will be working closely with Del Toro, who is expected to be fairly hands on, at least during pre-production.

Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez is best known for helming the 2013 remake of Evil Dead, as well as a few episodes of El Rey Network’s “From Dusk till Dawn: The Series“.  He is already in post on another horror film for release next year, A Man in the Dark, and is developing an adaptation of the popular Dante’s Inferno video game.  Alvarez certainly has the pedigree for such a gig and would make for a good choice.

Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado are the Israeli directing duo responsible for Rabies (2010) and Big Bad Wolves (2013).  The most recently contributed a segment (“F is for Falling) to the horror anthology The ABCs of Death 2 last year.  They have another original project in the works titled Vengeance, but it appears to be something that could be pushed back if they land this job.  I’m less familiar with their work, but they also seem to be a fitting choice, should they land it.

On the casting front, while no one has been locked in just yet, the following actors are being sought: Ben Mendelsohn for villain Anton Arcane, Ron Perlman for Swamp Thing, and Monica Bellucci for Madame Xanadu.  Some rumors also place Colin Farrell as the top contender for John Constantine and Ewan McGregor for Jason Blood/Etrigan the Demon, but we have not been able to confirm either with our own sources thus far.  Previous characters also rumored for inclusion in the project are Deadman, Zatanna, The Spectre, and The Phantom Stranger.

    Yay! Go Fede! Go Uruguay!

I really hope they add Deadman to the film. His banter with Constantine is awesome in the book and he is one of the MVP’s on the team.

He was in there during the drafts written back when Del Toro was still attached to direct. I’m not sure if that is still the case, but here’s hoping!

Yeah. A PG13 movie, with Constantine in it. Oh man. That is like the preacher series, damned directly after the first trailer how showed us absolutly bullshit without any connection to the source material.
