R&B superstar Rihanna has been cast in Luc Besson’s next film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. An adaptation of the classic French science fiction comic, “Valerian and Laureline“, this is the French auteur’s biggest project to date and his first return to science fiction since 1997’s The Fifth Element. The film is in pre-production and is currently expected to arrive in theaters during Summer 2017.
While Besson has yet to reveal what character Rihanna will be portraying or if it will even be one from the comics, she joins an already-interesting cast comprised of Dane DeHaan as Valerian, Cara Delevingne as Laureline, and Clive Owen as Commander Arun Filitt. It will be very interesting to see who else Besson lands for the project, which hails from his company EuropaCorp and reportedly has a budget of $180 million. Production is slated for early next year and will reportedly run for six months, followed by a long post-production period. As a massive fan of The Fifth Element, I wish Besson nothing but luck in his efforts here and very much look forward to seeing the final film.
