Yesterday it was announced that veteran character actor and horror icon Tony Todd (Candyman) has been hired to voice the main villain in the upcoming second season of CW’s “The Flash“. Todd will be lending his ominous vocals to Zoom, the latest and biggest threat that Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) has contended with to date on the series. While Zoom’s alter-ego in the source material is Hunter Zolomon, according to comments by the show’s producers, his true identity on the show may well be a season long mystery.
Variety recently spoke to producer Andrew Kreisberg on the subject of The Flash’s new nemesis and Todd’s casting…
“Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated the actor’s voice… this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader – this iconic voice coming out of this mask.
Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.
The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.”
Interesting. Who is Zoom? And will Barry and new mentor (also Flash) Jay Garrick be able to stop him/her/it? I guess we’ll slowly begin to find out when the hit DC comics series returns this October. Regardless, Todd’s chilling voice coming from Zoom is a more than welcome addition to the show. In the meantime, check out a new promotional poster featuring Garrick’s trademark helmet…
Sorry. No data so far.
