Mads Might Be Bads In Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

Doctor Strange begins production in a little under three months and the casting is starting to finally be finalized for the main roles.  We already have Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role as Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Strange’s former friend turned arch-nemesis, Baron Mordo.  Rumors has it that Rachel McAdams is in talks to play the project’s female lead (likely to be Clea).  Now we have another name to add to potentially add to the list: Mads Mikkelsen.

Mind you the actor reportedly only has an offer out to him and there’s no word as to whether or not he has accepted.  That said, we do know that he is apparently eyed to play a second, as yet unnamed villain in the film.  No matter if Mikkelsen signs on or not (and we hope he does), we now know that Mordo is not the sole antagonist in the film.  So who could it be?

Many are suggesting that he could be up for one of Strange’s biggest foes, The Dread Dormammu.  This seems the likeliest option and if true, could potentially see Mikkelsen playing a long-term villain across future Strange sequels.  Dormammu isn’t the only possibility, however, with foes Nightmare and Mephisto (yep, Satan) also likely candidates for inclusion.  Both hail (and in some case, Hell) from other dimensions and could be plotting with Mordo to enter our realm.  To be honest, any of these characters would be a welcome addition to the MCU and Mads could knock all of these roles out of the park.

Marvel has been pretty forthcoming thus far when it comes to casting on this film, so whenever this undetermined menace is cast, we will likely get an announcement from them.  In the meantime, we have nothing but our imaginations to run with as we try to figure out exactly what Kevin Feige, director Scott Derrickson, and screenwriter Jon Spaihts have up their sleeves on this one.  Who would you like to see Mads Mikkelsen portray, if he is cast?  And how do you feel about him having another potential antagonist role at the House of Mouse so soon after being cast (in an undetermined role) in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is also due out next year?
