A few days ago we reported on a rumor that George Miller (Mad Max I-IV, The Witches of Eastwick) was supposedly circling a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel as one of his next films. There was no word as to whether or not he would make it before the already-announced Mad Max: The Wasteland, just that he was interested once more in directing a DC superhero film. His last chance at bat, Justice League: Mortal, famously remains unmade.
The latest wrinkle in this rumor is that, according to those in the know, there has been no movement whatsoever on a Man of Steel 2 recently. Den of Geek is currently stating that Man of Steel 2 is indefinitely on hold, which honestly makes a lot of sense. After all, Henry Cavill is playing Superman this coming year in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and is already expected to return to the role in both Justice League: Part I (2017) and Justice League: Part II (2019). Tossing a solo Superman film somewhere in between could over-saturate the market and water down the brand, so placing any such project on hold for now is the smart play.
Will we ever see a second solo Supes film with Henry Cavill in the lead? Maybe. Maybe not. It all really depends on how many films the actor is currently under contract to make and whether or not Cavill, WB, or both will be interested in continuing their partnership once his current contract is up. As for George Miller, the site claims that the director is indeed still circling a DC project or two at the moment, just not Man of Steel 2. Who knows, maybe Zack Snyder wants a break and he’ll end up doing one of the Justice League films? Only time will tell.
