With the first season of “Jessica Jones” in the bag and the second season of “Daredevil” currently underway, Marvel TV and Netflix are now setting their sights on getting “Luke Cage” up and running for his inaugural season. We already know that Mike Colter has the titular role and will be showcased first on “Jones”, but not much has been revealed about his own solo series. According to Deadline, Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard has now joined the cast.
Her role is said to be that of Minetta, a “powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life”. Deadline speculates that Minetta might actually turn out to be the villainous Black Mariah. A foe that has tangled often with Cage in the past, Mariah could easily be portrayed as a Wilson Fisk-type whose outward altruistic public persona masks her criminal ways.
Hell’s Kitchen currently has a power vacuum in its criminal underworld with the Kingpin now in jail. Perhaps Woodard has been partially filling that void in Fisk’s absence? Assuming that she is a villain, of course. We could well be looking at a positive force in Cage’s life. Woodard is a talented actress and could easily play either type. We look forward to seeing what she brings to the Marvel universe on Netflix.
