Whether we like it or not, 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ninja rapped its way to $485 million worldwide, ensuring a sequel: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half Shell. Despite the fact that their wonderful animated series (currently in its third season) may well be the best thing in the franchise since the comics, Nickelodeon (along with Platinum Dunes) faceplanted creatively with their theatrical incarnation. A tonal mess of a film that appeared to be pieced together after a few rounds of reshoots, it’s a rough watch at best and quite possibly the worst of the films to date. Lucky for us, the creative team has been shaken up for the sequel!
The cast has also seen a few additions, one of which is Stephen Amell as everyone’s favorite hockey mask-wearing vigilante Casey Jones. Amell has experience with playing vigilantes, of course, given that he plays DC hero Green Arrow on the hits CW series, “Arrow“. Here’s hoping he uses this as an opportunity to send up his Oliver Queen persona a bit. Regardless, Amell recently spoke up during an interview with IGN about his experience playing Jones during the shoot this summer…
“It’s certainly not your father’s or your younger self’s Casey Jones, but that’s because we meet him at a very different time in his development. He is not the Casey Jones that a lot of comic fans have come to know and love. He is a guy with a job that lives in New York and loves hockey. When things go awry, [and] when he goes through the normal methods of what someone would do when they’re [a] law-abiding citizen and he’s met with laughter and scorn… he decides to take things into his own hands.”
Promising a lighter-hearted tone and less dour take on the franchise, the (turtle) powers that be are hoping the film will be a return to form for the franchise and help propel it to a long life in theaters. Part of their strategy involves pushing The Shredder and his Foot clan to the forefront again, as well as adding a colorful assortment of some of the properties more iconic characters. Baxter Stockman, Beboy & Rocksteady, the Kraang…all are expected to show. And, of course, Casey Jones! Here’s hoping they are more successful at creating an entertaining Ninja Turtles movie this time around!
