“Justice Has A Bad Side” In The First ‘Suicide Squad’ Teaser!

The bad boys and girls of the DC Cinematic Universe have arrived!  Hot on the heels of the new Batman v Superman trailer comes the first teaser for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.  Featuring a Dirty Dozen of DC rogues, it looks like Warner Bros. has unleashed Ayer & Co. for a round of antihero insanity, giving us a look at an entirely different corner of the DC world…

For starters, it’s nice that they are allowing Jai Courtney to use his native Australian accent as Captain Boomerang.  Granted the character himself is an Aussie, but it’s not like that ever stopped Hollywood from Americanizing roles before.  Margot Robbie appears to be having a blast as Harley Quinn.  The use of “I Started A Joke” was a nice touch.  Smith is predictably presented the straight (bad) man in the proceedings.  Here’s hoping he brings his A game as Deadshot and doesn’t just give us “Will Smith grimly hanging with supervillains” throughout.

Viola Davis gets the most amount of exposure here, especially in terms of voice, as the cunning and conniving head of ARGUS, Amanda Waller.  Then, of course, there is Jared Leto’s Joker.  While it’s hard to get a true handle on his performance just yet, it’s clear that he’s making it his own and not mimicking those who came before.  I expected nothing less from Leto.  Love him or hate him, the man has talent and remains entirely committed to whatever he puts his mind to.

We also have nice glimpses of the other members of the Squad, from Killer Croc to El Diablo to Rick Flag.  As well as a Batman sequence of some kind!  We’ve seen the set pics over the past few months, both of Batman riding atop the Joker’s car and of Affleck on set as Bruce Wayne.  I don’t expect the Caped Crusader to be in a lot of the film, however, and wouldn’t be surprised at all if the sequence glimpsed turns out to be a flashback or even a James Bond-style opening extravaganza.

So what do you think of our third official film in the DC Cinematic Universe?

Suicide Squad is slated to hit theaters on August 5, 2016.  Written and directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith as ‘Floyd Lawton/Deadshot’, Jared Leto as ‘The Joker’, Margot Robbie as ‘Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn’, Joel Kinnaman as ‘Rick Flag’, Jai Courtney as ‘Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang’, Viola Davis as ‘Amanda Waller’, Cara Delevingne as ‘June Moone/Enchantress’, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as ‘Waylon Jones/Killer Croc’, Karen Fukuhara as ‘Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana’, Jay Hernadez as ‘Chato Santana/El Diablo’, Adam Beach as ‘Christopher Weiss/Slipknot’, Common as ‘The Tattooed Man’, and Ike Barinholtz as ‘Dr. Hugo Strange’.  Also starring are Jim Parrack, Scott Eastwood, Alex Meraz, David Harbour, and Raymond Olubowale.

Hadn’t noticed the Hugo Strange casting initially

    WOW

  • Will Schuster

    Meh

  • REC03

looks pretty good but i could do without the melodramatic music.

    • Dylan Moore

What is the point of creating a world that is more dramatic than this one if kids from this one call the made up one melodramatic. I don’t know why people pay to see films anymore. I think people like you just watch them to talk about them and forget about them.

  • Really cool. Haunting music seems something they took from the Age of Ultron trailer, but it worked. Joker, Batman, Superman reference. Like!

  • Awesome!

  • Skull Crusher

The joker just doesn’t look right. im trying to give leto the benefit of the doubt because he’s a good actor but im just not feeling it.

Margot Robbie looks amazing and I’m glad she’s got so much screen time in the trailer.

“and doesn’t just give us “Will Smith grimly hanging with supervillains” throughout.” Actually, this is exactly what I expect from Smith. He plays every role this way, and is why I think there were better choices out there for Deadshot. I’m skeptical, but willing to give it a chance.

    • Jonathan Larsson

I agreed. While it’s still a little early to nail the cat on the wall, the skepticism is justified. The risk is that he’s too distracting from the rest of the character rooster, and might feel a bit awkward playing an anti-villain as opposed to his good-guy roles.

Only thing missing is Johnny Depp as the Riddler. That’s what a lot of fans wanted to see in Dark Knight Rises, and he could still really work in the role if they decided to make it a serious interpretation.

  • Four Fingered Fred

don’t understand all the hate, this actually looks halfway decent.

  • Werewolf

Looks like DC universe goes to “Hot Topic”.

Good enough reason for me to avoid it.
